What is NMAT?

NMAT by GMAC or NMAT is a national-level management entrance for admission to MBA/PGDM courses. Pearson VUE is conducting NMAT 2019, on behalf of Graduate Managament Admission Council (GMAC), from October 4 to December 17, 2019 in online mode. NMAT is a unique MBA entrance exam on the lines of GMAT, wherein the candidate can attempt the exam thrice in a 75-day test window.

NMAT Eligibility Criteria 2019

The exam conducting authority has specified the following eligibility criteria for NMAT 2019. All the management aspirants should go through the eligibility requirements before applying for the examination.

  • Graduate degree must be completed under 10+2+3 or 4 years education pattern from any stream.
  • Minimum 50% marks in aggregate is required in the final year of graduation.
  • Candidates awaiting results or appearing in the final year examination are also eligible to apply for NMAT 2019. Admission is granted on provisional basis till graduation mark sheets and certificate of qualifying the examination are submitted.

Additionally, candidates should check the eligibility criteria of NMAT participating colleges individually before registering for the examination. They are required to select five institutes of their preference for admission while applying and those institutes can have different eligibility criteria for admission.

NMAT 2019 Selection Process

NMAT selection process, comprising GD (Group Discussion) and PI (Personal Interview) rounds, are organized individually by each institute accepting NMAT score, for shortlisted candidates. The graphic below provides a quick snapshot of the entire admission process for management programmes offered through NMAT.

Here is a brief look at the different stages of NMAT selection process:

NMAT Exam

The first stage in the selection process is qualifying the NMAT exam conducted in online mode. The online paper has three sections Language Skills, Quantitative Skills and Logical Reasoning.

The duration of the test is 2 hours and a total of 120 MCQs are asked in the exam. The table below indicates the questions distribution and time allocated for each section.

GD – PI Round

The next stage in the NMAT selection process is the GD & PI round. This is conducted at the individual level for all the candidates shortlisted based on NMAT score. Candidates must meet the cut off score stipulated by the exam conducting authority.

The participating institute may also decide to conduct WAT (Writing Ability Test) or Case Discussion (CD) round instead of the conventional GD round. The decison of final admission is usually based on the combined performance in NMAT online test and GD – PI round.

NMAT 2019 Exam Day Guidelines

  • Report to the allotted exam centre for NMAT by GMAC 2019 at least an hour before the exam begins.
  • Carry NMAT 2019 admit card as well as one valid photo ID (original as well as one copy) to the venue
  • Valid photo IDs include Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, PAN card, Driving License and Debit Card/Credit Card (with signature of candidate)
  • Do not carry any prohibited electronic items, study material or mobile phones as these items are not allowed in the exam centres
  • NMAT admit card contains important instructions for the exam day and test centre. Don’t forget to carefully go through the instructions.

NMAT 2019 Test Centre Facility for Test Takers with Disabilities

Test takers with disability will have access to special arrangements during NMAT by GMAC including accommodation facility. Such candidates should submit a request to GMAC for the same while filling up NMAT application form.

Candidates with following disabilities can avail this facility:

  • Mobility impairment
  • Learning disability
  • Blindness (low vision to no vision)
  • Leprosy
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Others

Other arrangements made by GMAC for disabled candidates are:

Note: Applicants with vision impairment are allowed to be assisted by a scribe. Candidates can bring their own scribe also, however, they need to seek approval by GMAC before taking the exam. 

Important FAQs for NMAT

Q. What is the 75-day test window in NMAT?

A. The 75-day test window reduces the overall stress among the candidates. Candidates can schedule the test as per their convenience and preparation status. Candidates are allowed to take NMAT by GMAC exam for a maximum of 3 attempts. 

In case the candidates are not satisfied with the performance or if they are not confident about their preparation for the exam, the long testing window will allow aspirants to take the test as per their comfort and readiness.

Q. How many times can one register for the NMAT exam?

A. No duplicate/multiple applications are accepted for NMAT 2019 exam. Multiple registration can in fact lead to the cancellation of candidature and fee being forfeited.

Q. Specification for documents to be uploaded in the application form/

A. The main specification for uploads in the application form are:

  • Acceptable photograph formats – JPG, PNG, and GIF
  • Landscape or rotated pictures are not acceptable
  • File size of images should not exceed 1 MB. Photographs should have a preferably white or light-colored background
  • Photographs should have a preferably white or light-colored background

Q. Is there a form correction facility for NMAT 2019 Application Process?

A. No changes except for the ‘School Preference’ and ‘Communication Preference’ fields in the application form are allowed after submission of application fee. All the particulars must be carefully cross checked before submitting the application form.

Q. How will the candidates be informed about the time and date slot for NMAT 2019 test?

A. Candidates have the freedom to choose their own date and time slot as per their convenience for NMAT by GMAC exam. The date & time slot along with location of the testing centres are available on first-cum-first-serve basis.

The scheduling option will be available after the candidates receive confirmation mail from the exam conducting authority after succesful registration. The option for scheduling test will be available under the exam tab on the candidate dashboard in NMAT by GMAC account. The date and time slot with the exam venue will be printed on the admit card as well.

Q. What is the procedure to retake in NMAT 2019?

A. Retake option for NMAT exam will be available in the candidates existing registration account after the first attempt, subject to successful payment of application fee. Candidates can retake NMAT 2019 for a maximum of two times during the 75-day test window.

The option to retake test is present in the ‘Retake tab’ in the dashboard of a candidate’s account. Candidates have to wait for 15 days before retaking NMAT exam again.

Q. What is the procedure to reschedule NMAT exam?

A. Facility to reschedule the test is available within a window of 72 hours before the scheduled slot. One can reschedule for a different date, time and test venue, subject to availability. An additional fee has to be remitted via credit card only. A confirmation email will be sent out if the rescheduled test slot is approved.

Q. Is there any option to review a section after completing it?

A. Candidates can review the section after completing it, within the allotted time limit only. They can review and change their answer anytime within the allotted time limit for a section.

However, once a test taker moves to the next section, they will not be able to return to the previous section. Therefore, it is advised to complete a section and review it properly within the allotted time frame only.

Q. What do scaled scores and percentile scores refer to in NMAT exam?

A. Here is the basic difference between scaled scores and percentile scores in NMAT:

Scaled scores – The test forms are equated to account for any difference in the overall difficulty and the raw test scores are normalized on a common scale to arrive at scaled scores.

Percentile scores – The percentile rank or score is an indicator of candidate’s score/rank when compared with the score/rank of all the other test takers.

Q. What are the NMAT exam windows?

A. The NMAT exam is conducted over 75 day period. It is divided into 5 windows in which each window is 15 days long (first and last date is inclusive in the window).

Q. What is the meaning of retake of NMAT exam?

A. By exam retake one understands that, aspirants can appear for NMAT exam three times i.e. first write the exam once and then reapply for it two more times. In other words, the process of reapplying for the exam is known as exam retake. However, candidates can reappear for the exam only after 15 or more calendar days.

Q. What is scheduling and rescheduling of NMAT exam?

A. Scheduling the exam is choosing a time slot for the exam. Aspirants can schedule for the exam only after the registration fee payment. Once any aspirant register for exam retake, they will have to schedule the retake exam as well. This is known as re-take scheduling. However, if a situation arises where one cannot appear for the exam on the chosen date, then they can change the date and select another. This process is called exam reschedule.
